DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. —A Daytona Beach woman is accused of sex trafficking, and police say the victim was a teenage girl.
Lashonda Riley, 23, was arrested on Tuesday during a prostitution sting at an area hotel. Police said Riley coerced a teenager to act as a prostitute for Riley's own financial gain.
"She's really not doing anything but just sitting back, collecting the money," said Jimmie Flynt, Daytona Beach Police spokesman. "She must have saw how lucrative it was to be controlling somebody to force them into the sex acts."
An officer, posing as a john, contacted the teenager through the website Backpage.com, which police said is known to be used by prostitutes and pimps.
When the teen was arrested, she admitted being underage and agreed to call Riley to come to the room, according to investigators.
WESH 2 spoke with Riley by phone from the Volusia County Jail. She admitted she has prostituted, but says the 17-year-old got into the trade against Riley's advice.
"That is a lie. I don't even, I don't even go with her," Riley said. "Why would I beat her up if she don't give me no money?"
Riley also said, "I never pimped nobody. I never pimped this girl. I look at her like a sister. I told her this not something you always want to do with your life, do better."
But police said when they learned of possible trafficking, they had the 17-year-old call Riley to come to the hotel, pretending the customer wanted two girls.
"When the officer asked who should I pay, she immediately says you pay me, I'm the one that controls the money," Flynt said.
But Riley thinks when the teen got caught, she set Riley up to protect herself.
"How can I get somebody into something they were already doing," Riley said.
