Dear Friends,

A mere follow-up letter cannot possibly describe the experience I had while in India. Honestly, I’m struggling to process and contain it all myself. On the last day I was there the director, Vicki, asked me how I felt. I said, “Everyone is going to ask me how India was and I don’t know what to say.” She replied, “India isn’t described, it is experienced.” I learned how true that is.

I want to share with you a glimpse of what I witnessed in the slums of Mumbai. On day three of my trip I was walking around the most notorious red light district in one of the largest slums of the city. I was meeting various women who were involved with Rahab’s Rope’s location in that district. One woman I met was younger than me but appeared to be much older. It was obvious her life had aged her in many ways. I learned that she had two children. Her son spent the first two years of his life tied to a pole while she was forced to prostitute herself. When her daughter reached the age of five she put her to work – selling her to men. My meeting with this woman was brief. As I went on meeting more women - one whose foot was open raw to the bone because a man beat her with an iron rod, another woman who was six months pregnant and bleeding, but still working - I was overcome with nausea and grief. I couldn’t allow myself to become too distracted, however, as I had to avoid leering men, dogs fighting, and children defecating in the streets. It was a dark and difficult day. The next day was Sunday and I experienced God’s redeeming power. The two children of the woman I had met the day before were adopted into a loving, Christian home and I had the pleasure of spending the whole day with them. It blessed me to hold them, hug them, sing to them, eat with them, and witness their hope.

Your financial gifts and intercessory prayer made such an impact it cannot be fully realized. I appreciate your investment in me and all whom I served during my time in India. I had the privilege of speaking multiple times throughout the trip. I helped lead a retreat for the Indian staff members of Rahab’s Rope, and addressed about one hundred women from two different red light districts. I also spoke at an after care home for women who have been rescued out of the districts, and prayed with their children at the orphanage they are temporarily in.

I want to honor the people I met and their stories by advocating for them and others like them. Please continue to pray for the women and children in the red light districts of Mumbai, and also for me as God leads me in my anti-trafficking work.  My mission to Mumbai has come and gone, but the experience I had will never leave me.

Thank you for partnering with me.

With love,
Amanda
